When Secular Meets Sacred: Stephen Sanchez and the Spiritual Undertone of Pop Music

Worshipping Jesus is what brings us closer to His undying love for us. Worshiping is when we’re able to become our most vulnerable selves with God and show Him how much He means to us. However, sometimes we can hit a wall where we’ve listened to all of our favorite Christian songs and don't know what the next new song is to listen to. Luckily, by God’s grace, He shines his light within secular music in the most mysterious and shy ways.
Stephen Sanchez, a folk-pop musician based in Nashville, TN is known for his groovy tunes and eccentric dance moves on stage. Sanchez, formerly known as ‘The Troubadour’ of the 21st century, grew up making his debut as a musician by worshiping at his local church and busking on the streets of his town. “Stephen isn’t even a Christian artist, why is he even getting a review published on this site?”. Let’s face it, when we are growing our relationship with Jesus we want Him to be our one and only focus but that also means turning away from the music we once enjoyed listening to. However, who says we have to give up all of our favorite music and musicians?
We typically give into the influencers and the church community’s advice when we’re first learning how to build a better connection with the Lord. “Give up this”, “Give up that”, “If you listen to this type of music you aren’t obedient to God”, “If you are a fan of this person then you’re putting them as an idol before God”. It all can become extremely overwhelming which makes it difficult to understand what is right and what is wrong. Artists such as Stephen Sanchez, however, is the perfect example of a non-christian artist where God’s light shines through his music.
While on tour performing at the New York State Fair, Sanchez explains before singing an unreleased song titled,’Into Your Heart’ how Jesus has saved him:
“I found a savior and someone really beautiful and He has totally changed my life. I wrote this song as a love letter from Him to you. I feel like it shows I can give Him as a gift to you to tell you you are so loved… you are loved exactly as you are and that's all you’re ever gonna be”.
God has a talent and a gift for each and every one of us. He puts desires on our heart because He knows what will make us happy and what won’t. Although Sanchez isn’t a Christian based musician, He sure is the definition of someone who gets to use their platform for the greater good, which is, proclaiming their love for Jesus and spreading the good word, especially since the main focus of his music is all about love.
Keep up with Stephen!
